telephone tubes… March 24, 2008

… top idea we did for Science Week – take about 3m of garden hose (so a 15m length will do about 5) and make cone shaped card cone thingies at either end (preferably different colours so red can be the listening end and blue the speaking) and then attach with gaffa tape.

Get the kids to whisper down one end and listen at the other and they’ll have hours of fun. You can, if you feel confident, explain the basics of sound waves and telephone systems…

Great craft idea here: make cardboard tunic / armour type affair and 2 wristbands, cover with long strips of crepe paper a la morris dancer, i.e. stuck at the top. Take child out into wind and let wind blow through strips – really effective. Ok I haven’t actually done it but I will and imagine it’ll be very impressive…

So 3 brilliant crafty / present ideas:

  1. an ABC for a new baby – some friends made this for my first child, taking a 3 letters each and making them out of rose petals, sequins, beans etc! They put them altogther in an Ikea frame and it’s still hanging on my kid’s wall and they love it
  2. the naming quilt, second picture, was for Gabe’s naming ceremony – I asked everyone to bring a piece of material and they got my sister (I can’t and won’t sew) to make it into a quilt
  3. for Jude’s naming do (we went to the oldest Yew tree in Britain at Much Marcle, as told in Meetings with Remarkable Trees) we got everyone to send us their favourite poem and put them together in a little book for him
